Description
Felt bowl, or Radial shaft seal, is one of the sealing or insulating components of the car, which is used in the shafts and has the task of sealing them. Its name can be related to the use of felt in the past to seal the joints of shafts, bearings and roller bearings. The felt in these joints prevented fluids such as water or oil from penetrating into or out of the shaft shell or similar parts. Accordingly, today this part is called felt bowl sealant. The felt bowl is also used to seal shells containing different fluids. But its main use is in the connections of rotating parts such as rotating shafts. These parts need oiling and lubrication to move easily and rotate away from friction. But this oil should not penetrate into other parts, this is where the felt bowl shows its effectiveness and performs the desired insulation to prevent the movement and escape of fluid such as oil. Therefore, the felt bowl is used in various parts of the car such as pistons, shock absorbers, steering valves, valves and even pistons and plays a vital role. In some theories, the felt bowl is called Oil Seal. In this theory, the felt bowl is known as one of the components of the car's lubrication system, and other tasks are also assigned to it. These tasks include:
- prevention of oil wastage by preventing its leakage;
- Preventing the entry of pollution and dust particles into the oil components;
- Prevention of water penetration into components and water and oil interference;
- Preventing the contact of rotating metal components and creating friction between them and helping them work smoothly.
Of course, these tasks are also included in the main and general task of the felt bowl, i.e. insulation of moving parts and shells containing fluids. This main task can be summed up in covering the empty space between the bearing and the shafts that are moving on top of each other for insulation purposes.
